Kukirin Scooters in Malta: The Budget Kings (And Why We Fix Them)

If you stand on the Strand in Sliema for five minutes, you will likely see a few Kukirin scooters whizzing by. They are everywhere. And if you stand in the Techboss workshop for five minutes, you’ll see just as many—usually with their insides spread out on a workbench.

There is no denying that Kukirin (formerly Kugoo/KugooKirin) has flooded the Maltese market. They offer high specs—fast speeds and big motors—for a budget price. On paper, they look like a steal.

But as the leading electric scooter authority in Malta, we believe in transparency. There is a difference between “cheap” and “value.” Here is the unfiltered truth about owning a Kukirin in Malta, why they require so much maintenance, and why Techboss has become the unofficial “hospital” for these machines.

The Reality of “Budget Power”

Kukirin marketing focuses on one thing: Numbers. They promise you 50km/h or 60km/h for a fraction of the price of a premium brand.

For many new riders, this is attractive. You get on, you pull the throttle, and you go fast. But “going fast” is the easy part. The hard part is reliability, stability, and stopping power.

When you strip away the flashy aggressive styling, you are often left with older-generation technology.

  • The Frames: Often prone to developing “wobbles” at the folding mechanism after a few months of Maltese potholes.
  • The Controllers: Square-wave technology that delivers power in jerky bursts rather than a smooth curve, which heats up components faster.
  • The Suspension: While they look tough, the springs are often stiff and squeaky, offering a bouncy ride rather than a dampened, controlled one.

The “Tire Trap” – A Common Maltese Headache

If there is one specific reason Kukirin owners end up at our workshop, it is the tires.

To keep costs down, many Kukirin models come from the factory fitted with tires made from a softer, lower-grade rubber compound. On smooth warehouse floors, they work fine. On Maltese roads—with our hot asphalt, sharp aggregate, and constant debris—they are a nightmare.

We frequently see customers whose stock Kukirin tires have torn or split within days of purchase.

Not punctured. Torn.

The rubber simply cannot handle the torque of the motor combined with the friction of our roads. This is a safety hazard. A tire failure at 40km/h isn’t just an inconvenience; it’s a hospital visit.

The Fix:

At Techboss, we stock PMT (Italian racing tires) and high-quality reinforced off-road tires that fit Kukirin rims. If you own a Kukirin, we strongly recommend swapping your tires before the stock ones fail.

Why We “Put Up” With Them (And Stock All The Parts)

You might wonder: If Techboss prefers Segway and Teverun, why do you fix Kukirin?

The answer is simple. We are Malta’s #1 Scooter Store. That means we have a responsibility to keep the roads safe.

With so many Kukirin scooters on the island, someone needs to offer professional, safe repairs. We have accepted that these scooters are part of the ecosystem. We don’t sell them because we don’t believe they meet our “Techboss Quality Standard,” but we do repair them because we don’t want you stuck on the side of the road.

We have become Malta’s largest stockist of Kukirin spare parts out of necessity, not choice.

  • Controllers & Displays: Because the electronics often overheat in the Maltese summer.
  • Brake Pads: Because the stock brakes wear down incredibly fast on our hills.
  • Suspension Arms: For when the “off-road” promise meets a real pothole.

We keep these parts on the shelf so you aren’t waiting 6 weeks for a shipment from China while your scooter gathers dust.

The Maintenance Reality

A look at the expected maintenance schedule of a budget scooter vs. a premium one.

The Upgrade Path: When You Are Ready for Real Quality

Usually, a rider’s journey in Malta looks like this:

  1. Buy a cheap scooter online to “try it out.”
  2. Enjoy the speed, but suffer from constant flat tires, squeaks, and loose bolts.
  3. Come to Techboss for repairs.
  4. Test ride a Teverun or Segway and realize what they’ve been missing.

Why Teverun?

If you like the “aggressive” look of a Kukirin G2 or G4, the Teverun Fighter is what that scooter wants to be when it grows up. You get the speed and the looks, but you also get hydraulic suspensionTFT displaysNFC security, and sine-wave controllers that are silent and smooth. It’s the difference between a tuned-up hatchback and a factory-built sports car.

Why Segway?

If you are tired of fixing things and just want a tank that works every single day, the Segway Max G3 or GT series is the answer. They are virtually indestructible.

Need Parts? Need a Fix? We Are Here.

We might be critical, but we are also professionals. If you own a Kukirin, we will treat it with the same respect as a €3,000 super-scooter.

We offer:

  • Tire Upgrades: Swap those cheap stock tires for high-grip rubber.
  • Brake Bleeding & Adjustment: Essential for those steep hills in Mellieħa.
  • Electrical Diagnostics: If your motor cuts out or your screen goes blank.

Don’t let a budget scooter compromise your safety. If you hear a rattle, feel a wobble, or see a tear in your tire, bring it to Techboss immediately.

Teverun vs. KuKirin: Why True Riders Choose Power Over Toys

By Techboss Malta – The Original Electric Scooter Authority.

Reading Time: 5 Minutes | Categories: Electric Scooters Malta, Performance Guides, Techboss Reviews

The King is Back.

Let’s cut the noise. I brought the electric scooter revolution to Malta. When I started Techboss, the streets were empty. Now, they are flooded with options. But as the market has grown, so has the confusion. You see “big numbers” on cheap scooters and think you’re getting a deal. You aren’t.

Today, we are settling the debate between the two biggest names people ask us about: Teverun (The Premium Performance King) and KuKirin (The Budget Contender).

If you are commuting from Sliema to Valletta, climbing the steep hills of Mellieħa, or just want to survive Malta’s potholes without rattling your teeth out, you need to read this.

1. The Heart of the Machine: Sine Wave vs. Square Wave

This is the single biggest difference nobody tells you about, but you feel it instantly.

  • KuKirin (The Jerky Ride): Most KuKirin models (like the G2/G3 series) use Square Wave Controllers. These are cheap technology. They deliver power in “blocks.” When you hit the throttle, it jerks. It’s loud. It’s aggressive in a bad way. In slow traffic, it’s a nightmare to control because it’s either “ON” or “OFF.”
  • Teverun (The Smooth Operator): Teverun uses Sine Wave Controllers (often 50A to 90A!). This technology matches the natural frequency of the motor. The result? Dead silence and surgical precision. You can crawl at 3 km/h through a busy promenade smoothly, but the second you twist the throttle, you get instant, linear, rocket-ship acceleration.

Winner: Teverun. It’s the difference between driving a manual car with a bad clutch vs. a Tesla.

Techboss Verdict: Malta’s traffic is unpredictable. You need the precision of Teverun’s Sine Wave technology to navigate safely.

2. The Suspension: Springs vs. Hydraulics

Malta’s roads are… let’s be polite… “challenging.”

  • KuKirin: Uses basic Spring Suspension. It’s bouncy. If you hit a pothole at 40 km/h, the scooter bounces up and down like a pogo stick. It creates “wobble” at high speeds, which is terrifying.
  • Teverun: Uses Adjustable Hydraulic Suspension (KKE Hydraulics on the Fighter series). This is motorcycle-grade tech. When you hit a bump, the shock absorbs the energy and dampens the rebound. The tires stay glued to the road.

Winner: Teverun. Do you want to bounce, or do you want to glide?

3. Hill Climbing: The Voltage Truth

In Malta, flat roads don’t exist. You are always going up or down.

  • KuKirin: Most of their lineup is 48V or 52V. This is fine for flat ground. But put a 90kg rider on a hill in St. Julian’s, and you will feel the motor dying. As the battery drains, the power drops significantly (Voltage Sag).
  • Teverun: The Fighter series runs on 60V and 72V systems. Higher voltage means consistent power. A Teverun Fighter Supreme doesn’t “climb” hills; it accelerates up them.

Real World Example:

  • KuKirin G3 Pro: Struggles to maintain 30km/h on a steep incline.
  • Teverun Fighter 11+: Smashes the same hill at 60km/h without breaking a sweat.

The Head-to-Head: Models Comparison

We put the most popular models side-by-side. The numbers don’t lie.

Lighting & Visibility: Tron Vibes vs. Basic Beams

If you are riding at night in Malta, visibility isn’t just about looking cool—it’s about survival. This is where the difference between a budget build and a premium machine becomes blindingly obvious.

The Kukirin Reality: Most Kukirin models come with a standard setup: a headlight and a tail light. While functional, they are often basic “flashlight” style beams. They light up what is directly in front of you, but they do very little to make you visible to cars coming from the side—a huge risk at roundabouts or junctions.

The Teverun “Lumina” System: Teverun doesn’t just bolt a light onto the stem; they integrate lighting into the DNA of the scooter.

  • 360° Visibility: The Fighter and Supreme series feature full RGB LED strips running along the stem and the deck. You aren’t just a moving shadow; you are a glowing object visible from every angle.
  • App-Controlled Customization: Unlike the static lights on a Kukirin, Teverun puts you in control. Using the Teverun App, you can customize the RGB patterns, colors, and flow effects. Want a “Cyberpunk Neon” look? You got it. Want a solid color to match your helmet? Done.
  • Turn Signals That Work: The turn indicators aren’t tiny afterthoughts. They are integrated into the lighting system, making your intentions clear to the drivers behind you.

The Verdict: On dark stretches like the Coast Road or Bahar ic-Caghaq, a Kukirin helps you see the pothole. A Teverun

ensures the car doing 80km/h sees you.

Start Your Engines (Or Don’t)

Security in Malta is a real concern. Leaving your scooter outside a shop for 5 minutes shouldn’t be stressful.

  • The Key Problem: Many scooters rely on a generic ignition key. The problem? They are easy to pick, easy to lose, and often the ignition barrel is the first thing to rust in the humidity.
  • The NFC Solution: Teverun uses an NFC Smart Lock system. You tap your card (or your phone) to unlock the scooter. It’s faster, waterproof, and impossible to pick. No card? The scooter is a brick. It’s the same tech used in modern cars, applied to your daily ride.

The “Death Wobble” Reality

We see it in the workshop every week. A scooter comes in with a “wobbly stem.”

Budget scooters often use a single-clamp folding mechanism. After 500km on Maltese roads, the metal fatigues, and the stem starts to rock back and forth. It feels unsafe because it is unsafe.

Teverun uses a heavy-duty triple-clamp or hook system (depending on the model) designed to handle high speeds. The stem is rock solid. When you hit a bump, the suspension absorbs it—not the handlebars.

Why Techboss Malta?

I didn’t just open a shop; I built the culture. Buying a scooter is easy. Keeping it running is the hard part.

  1. Parts in Stock: We stock Teverun parts in Sliema. If you break a fender or need brake pads, we have them. If you buy a KuKirin online and it breaks, good luck waiting 2 months for parts from China.
  2. The Warranty: We stand behind Teverun because we know they don’t break. We offer real, local warranty support.
  3. The “Techboss Tune”: Every Teverun sold is checked, tightened, and tuned by us before you ride it. We ensure no “death wobbles,” no loose screws, and perfect brake alignment.

Final Verdict

KuKirin is for people who want a toy to play with on the weekend. Teverun is for people who value their life, their time, and their ride quality.

If you want the best electric scooter in Malta, there is only one choice. Come to the masters.

Teverun Electric Scooters Have Landed in Malta: Why They Are the Ultimate Ride for Our Roads

For years, Maltese riders have asked us for a machine that bridges the gap between a daily commuter and a high-performance racing scooter. You wanted something that could handle the steep hill up to Naxxar without losing speed, yet was compact enough to store in an apartment in Sliema.
The wait is over. Techboss Malta is proud to announce that we are now the official retailer for Teverun Electric Scooters in Malta.

If you’ve been searching for the “best electric scooter in Malta,” you’ve likely come across the Teverun name. Born from a collaboration between the giants Blade and Minimotors, Teverun has taken the global market by storm. Here is why they are the perfect match for the Maltese islands.

1. Built for Malta’s Unique Terrain

Let’s be honest: riding in Malta isn’t like riding in other European cities. We have steep hills, potholes, and heat. Most budget scooters struggle here.

Teverun scooters are different. Models like the Teverun Fighter Supreme and the Blade Mini Ultra come equipped with:
Hydraulic Suspension: Unlike stiff springs found on cheaper models, Teverun’s hydraulic system swallows the bumps on uneven Maltese roads, protecting your knees and ensuring a smooth ride.

Dual Motors as Standard: With peak power outputs reaching over 4000W on high-end models, these scooters don’t just “climb” hills—they accelerate up them. No more kicking your scooter to help it up the hill to Valletta.

2. The Teverun Lineup at Techboss

We have curated the best models specifically for the local market:
For the Urban Commuter: The Teverun Blade Mini
Don’t let the “Mini” fool you. This scooter packs a dual-motor punch in a compact frame. It’s perfect for weaving through traffic in Gzira or Msida and folds down easily for storage at the office. It features a robust folding mechanism and reliable disc brakes for sudden stops.

For the Speed Enthusiast: The Teverun Fighter Series

This is the beast. The Fighter Supreme offers motorcycle-grade stability with a top speed that dominates the road (restricted to legal limits for public use). With a massive 60V or 72V battery, you can easily do a round trip from the south of Malta to the north on a single charge without “range anxiety”.

3. Why Buy Teverun from Techboss?

Buying a high-performance scooter is an investment. You need to know that if something goes wrong, you have support.
Official Warranty: As the official seller, Techboss offers a genuine factory warranty. Buying from unauthorized grey-market sellers often leaves you stranded with no parts.
Local Repair Center: We are not just a shop; we are riders. Our service center in Sliema is fully stocked with Teverun spare parts, tires, and brake pads. If you get a flat tire or need a brake bleed, we handle it right here on the island.

4. Safety & Regulations

Riding a beast like a Teverun comes with responsibility. At Techboss, we ensure every scooter we sell is compliant with local Transport Malta regulations. We can guide you through the registration process (one-time fee of €10) and ensure you have the correct lights and insurance to ride legally and safely.

Ready to Upgrade Your Ride?

The era of struggling up hills is over. Experience the power, stability, and thrill of a Teverun.
Visit the Techboss Showroom in Sliema today to see these machines in person.

New government grant for E-kick scooters in Malta.

In last Novembers budget for 2024, the finance minister Clyde Caruana announced the extension of the renewable vehicles act to privately owned E-kick scooters. In a ‘surprised move’, Transport minister Aaron Farrugia has announced the outright ban on RENTAL E-kick scooters as of March 2024 however has emphasized the importance of renewable transport such as privately owned E-kick scooters.

Currently grants are available to practically every other electric vehicle, from E-cycles to E-trucks however the grant was never extended to E-Kick scooters, as of 2024 E-scooters will be more accessible to individuals further reducing the carbon footprint and congestion in our roads.

Finance minister Clyde Caruana hasn’t yet specified the exact amount of financial help prospective E-kick scooter users will receive, in fact it was a one liner which leaves us all quite curious. We will add to this article as soon as any announcement are made, meanwhile we ‘Sensible E-scooter users’ can only be grateful that our private scooter wasn’t also banned.

Tech Boss is awaiting further information regarding Grants for E-Kick scooter.

As rental companies allowed their customers to run wild on Maltese roads, tensions between residents and the government escalated, we @ Tech Boss worked very hard to keep the private E-kick scooter away from any likely bans. We thank the transport minister Dr Aaron Farrugia for believing in sensibly used kick scooters, on the other hand still think an outright ban on rental scooters was a little excessive.

Update: 05/08/2024

Scooters purchased between the 1st of March and the 31st of December 2024 may apply for the 150 Euro government grant for E kick scooters in Malta.

A form needs to be handed in to Transport Malta, they will determine if you will receive the grant or not.

VEH078 is the transport Malta document which needs to be filled in when applying for the grant.

Why we chose to stock and sell Segway Ninebot scooters in Malta.

As popularity increases we start to see many more electric kick scooter companies emerging onto the market, lots of scooters which vary in price and also in quality. with so many options out there it can become a little confusing for the buyer, especilly when most of these companies are pretty much startups with no track record.

Brief history

We started early, back in 2017 with our first Segway ES1 and then the ES2, at this time the only competitor was the equally as capable Xiaomi m365. Early on it was evident, Segway will be in this for the long haul and so their rapid development commenced. We saw the introduction of the ES3 and ES4, here Segway added an external battery and re designed some other mechanical elements which made the scooter slightly more robust and usable.

Our kick scooter store is located in Sliema, Malta.

When looking to purchase an electric scooter, one of the most important things to consider is reparability when needed. We are a fully equipped electric scooter repair shop in Malta, which means we stock most parts and possess the knowledge to enable us to repair your scooter in a timely manner.

The more inches, the better!

Segway Ninebot tires have increased in size over the years, early models were solid airless, low profile 7 inch tires which didn’t make for a comfortable ride. Later more recent models started to incorporate 10 x 2 and even 10 x 2.5 inch tires which are pneumatic. This increase in diameter means there is a greater distance between the road and the rim, this reduces the shock and hard impacts from travelling through the scooter and ultimately to the riders knees and wrists. Segway G series scooters introduced for the first time a 10 x 2.5 inch self healing tire, this means there is a wider footprint for better traction as well as the ability for the tire to heal itself if a foreign object had to pierce it. Competing brands within the same segment of micro mobility scooters are still using 8 inch tires on the most part.

Ninebot ES series kick scooters, by Segway.

Build quality of the Ninebot kick scooters by Segway

We initially started repairing kick scooters in Malta back in 2018, to date we have seen countless variations and clones of kick scooters. Having accumulated so much knowledge, it is quite easy for us now to spot a poorly built scooter and it is even easier for us to appreciate how good some scooters are compared to others.

Kick scooter frame construction.

Ninebot scooter frames are made from high grade metals, some models opt for aluminum and now more recently with the ‘D series’ kick scooters we started to see the use of other types of metals, Ninebot call it, ‘high toughness structural steel’

‘The D series has a double tube frame that forms a triangular shape and thus ensures high stability of the KickScooter. This robust frame has a load capacity of up to 120 kg on both the D28 and D38.’

Segway use a very strong aluminum for the construction of a number of their scooters, this is were we start to see differences in build quality from one brand to another. Aluminum is a blend of different metals, the process involved in producing aluminum for scooter frames widely varies from one manufacturer to another. One of the greatest risks when purchasing a clone or sub standard scooter is structural failure due to the poor quality of metal used. It is not common for us to receive clone scooters with frames which have literally snapped in half between the fork and main body whilst the user was riding. To date we have never had a single Segway scooter brake in this manner!

Ninebot’s constant development

Ninebot’s early days and struggles

Having repaired hundreds of kick scooters in Malta, we gained volumes of knowledge and throughout this time we saw the complete re-design of Ninebot kick scooters. The first ‘ES’ series scooters were great but this doesn’t mean they were perfect. Early models did struggle with some inherit problems which did effect sales, throughout this time, Xiaomi were producing an affordable scooter which didn’t share the same problems as early ES models.

Re-design, completely changing the Segway Ninebot scooter from top to bottom.

The Segway Ninebot ES series of scooters are incredibly difficult to work on when compared to Xiaomi or similar electric kick scooters. As an experienced technician I can tell you that even after having repaired so many scooters, I still find these to be my least favorite, the way in which the battery and main controller are so well tucked away and also the fact that a 5 minute repair job on a Xiaomi can take upwards of 90 minutes on an ‘ES’ scooter definitely means a re design was well overdue.

Ninebot learning from their mistakes

Ninebot have clearly learnt from their mistakes, the new design now means it is far less time consuming for a repair to be conducted, moreover the new design found on the D, F and G series scooters incorporates totally different internal components which almost 2 years in have definitely resolved previous faults. We have written a separate post highlighting the previous problems we encountered with the ES series scooter.

As time passed, user feedback helped Ninebot improve their platform, one major change was the introduction of larger 10 inch tires, the rest of the market was mainly focused on 8.5 inch tires. Larger tires make for a more comfortable ride and also a larger surface area in contact with the road for better grip.

previous electrical faults were solved by changing the thicknesses of cables used within the scooter as well as the complete re-design of their main controllers. As of October 2022, it is safe to point out that the D, F and G series Ninebot scooters haven’t yet shown mainboard failures. Yes there aren’t as many of them on Malta’s roads when compared to scooters which have been sold for over 5 years in Malta.

As 2022 progressed we saw Ninebot introduce more and more mobility scooters, now even mentioning entering the moped market, this for me is testament that Ninebot are focused on growing within this fast expanding market.

To conclude, I am confident to say, Ninebot have convinced me that their product is world leading, quality has only improved over the years and I cant notice any shortcuts or expenses being saved.

Are you looking to buy a grow tent in Malta?

We stock a number of grow tents which are made from the best materials. Sturdy iron frames, thick fabrics lined with Mylar and high quality reflective materials to provide 99% reflection within the grow tent,

As more states legalize weed growing and cannabis products price rise, more people start to join the cannabis community. The first thing to know is that cannabis is in strict need of the environment. Apparently, it’s hard to manage in living houses. As a result, grow tents come in as excellent solutions.

The only question is, what size grow tent do I need in my case?

  • What size grow tent for 1 plant?
  • What size grow tent for 2 plants? etc

How Much Space Does One Weed Need?

No matter how many plants you want to grow, or how much space you have available for them, you need to know how much area one weed needs as the first step for your indoor gardening. In general, how big cannabis can grow depends on many factors, such as training, root system… So the weed plants here are mature cannabis without training(or with simple training), grown in 3 or 5 gallon grow bags (the most widely used grow bag sizes).

A 3 or 5 gallon grow bag is 27 or 32 cm in diameter. An adult plant will be larger than the grow bag, about 16-17 cm larger. Therefore, an adult plant typically requires a flat space diameter of 43-49 cm (1.4-1.6 ft). In addition, you will need space for some equipment such as humidifiers, dehumidifiers, heaters, fans … So, all things considered, 2×2 feet is the space needed for a weed to grow to adulthood.

What Size Grow Tent In My Case?

After knowing how much space an adult plant needs, you can very easily figure out how much space you need for your cultivation. The sizes of the common grow tents on the market are also based on this algorithm.

We Mars Hydro indoor grow tents provide the following sizes: 2x2ft2.3×2.3ft2x4ft3x3ft4x4ft5x5ft4x8ft8x8ft…Can you figure out how many plants they can contain? Here is a picture to explain to you how large an area is needed for 2,4,8 plants.

How High Should My Grow Tent Be?

In addition to the horizontal space, the vertical space – height is an important role as well.

First, you need to take into account the distance between the light and the top – space for other equipment such as inline fans, carbon filters, ducting, etc. – one foot should be sufficient. The distance between the light and the plant canopy – depends largely on what grow lights you are using, and the vendor’s recommended hanging height – we recommend you leave 8-24 inches. That’s a total of 2-3 feet.

Then there’s your weed plant. Cannabis can grow up to 13 feet tall in nature, but in a typical indoor grow, it’s best to keep them under 1 meter (3.2 feet) with training.

In conclusion, you need a tent that is 5.2-6.2 ft. (158-189 cm)

The common 200 cm high grow tent on the market can perfectly meet your needs. And when you use some training techniques such as hitting the top or bending over …… A 180 cm high tent is also just right. Of course, if your weed plant is a dwarf species, a 160 cm tent is also enough.

What Size Grow Tent For 4 Plants?

Finally, we have the conclusion, a 4x4x6.5ft (120x120x200cm) grow tent is the best choice for 4 weed plants.

In this way, we can know what sizes of grow tents are needed for different numbers of plants. Likewise, it is possible to speculate how many weed plants can be planted in common grow tents on the market.

A grow tent is basically an enclosure which allows you to provide an ideal environment in which to grow your plants. The tents we provide in Malta are constructed using a sturdy metal frame which is powder coated, not just sprayed. Powder coating is a much stronger protective layer than paint. The frame of your grow tent needs to support heavy equipment such as light fixtures and fans, a sturdy steel frame is very important.
The metal frame is then covered in a strong thick fabric which is 99% reflective, its reflective properties ensure the plants get an even amount of light from the overhead lite source.

Grow lights

Grow light considerations

Choosing the correct grow light is an important step when building your home grow setup. Different lights are suitable for different applications. Some considerations when choosing the correct grow light would be,
Size of grow light, depends on the size of your enclosure
how many watts will the grow light consume?
How efficient is the grow light at converting Watts of power into usable light for your pants
The type of light produced by your grow light, its spectrum and intensity at different distances.
Is it an LED or halogen?

Different grow lights will produce different results.

Full spectrum lights for the entire life cycle of the plant, PPFD charts show you were different intensities of light are found on the growing surface. As lights vary in price and complexity, so do their ability to produce light. Below is an example of different lights, producing different amounts of usable light for growing.

Replacing Xiaomi standard tires with solids

Electric scooters are a great way to move around Malta and Gozo, their compact size makes them a great choice for commuting. Small compact size means smaller wheels, unfortunately the wheels on Xiaomi scooters don’t do too well on Maltese roads, it is for this reason that we recommend replacing the current pneumatic tires with solid rubber tires, this will prevent punctures in the future.
